Some shapeshifters are known to change their shape in a matter of seconds while others are known to take up to several hours. They can also take the forms of fictional characters or inhuman characteristics, such as vampire fangs or werewolf claws. They can also alter their eyes so they resemble their retinal flare. Some shapeshifters have displayed the ability to seamlessly shift into whoever they want without shedding their skin, similar to their Alpha.
In videos and cameras, a shifter's eyes will be a glowing silver-gold color. Unlike most other monster species, shapeshifters do not appear to be able to sense others of their kind, even when they know the shapeshifter in question. Mia Vallens was unable to tell that her ex-boyfriend Buddy , whom she was specifically trying to escape from, was impersonating one of her patients.
Furthermore, even after she knew that he was, she could not identify which one he was for the Winchesters. While some shapeshifters appear to simply cycle through appearances and never settle on one particular permanent appearance, others of the species appear to have a preferred appearance they use when they are not impersonating another person.
Its unclear if this form is simply one they like or, since they are born naturally and grow up like humans, whether its their original appearance. In Mia's case, her chosen form is not her original appearance as she stated she changed her face to avoid Buddy.
In Buddy's case, he had his chosen form so long that Mia had a picture of him in it. Shapeshifters are creations of the Mother of All Monsters, Eve. The first shapeshifter in all existence was the Alpha Shapeshifter. In Skin , Sam and Dean hunt down a shapeshifter who is turning into peoples loved ones and then killing them. The shapeshifter is killed by Dean. In Nightshifter , a Shapeshifter started using his abilities to rob banks and jewelry stores in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by studying the patterns of employees or buyers then killing them in an apparent suicide and taking on their form to commit the robberies while presumably hiding in the sewers between the places it robbed.
Eventaully, Sam and Dean Winchester pick up on the pattern and realize they are dealing with a shapeshifter from its retinal flare on a security tape shown to them by former security guard Ronald Reznick it had beaten up who believed it to be a "mandroid.
They identify it as taking the form of the bank manager from the retinal flare the shapeshifter displays in the security cameras, but Ronald, as no one believes him, takes over the bank to stop the "mandroid" and the shapeshifter escapes before Sam and Dean can get it. It then kills another man, hides his body in the celling tiles and takes on his form.
In the episode Monster Movie , a shape-shifter is goes a town during Oktoberfest as iconic monsters from the old Hollywood movies.
But many witches and wizards had the capability to shift themselves, and others, into any shape they wished, be it an animal, a human, or even some type of plant. Witches were believed to turn into hares, sneak onto properties, and steal milk, and butter. Hindu folklore tells of the Rakshasa, demonic beings that assume the shape of various animals in order to trick humans. The Rakshasa in their natural forms are said to have two large fangs, and long claws as fingernails.
They enjoy feasting on human beings. In Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, it is believed that a race of people called Naga exist. These entities are half mortal, half divine, and reside in the netherworld. Their natural forms are half-human, half serpent, but it is believed they have the ability to assume the shape of ordinary humans as well.
One type of shapeshifting that seems common across multiple cultures, and belief systems is that the dead can also assume the shape of an animal—sometimes in order to simply visit their loved ones, but often in an attempt to get revenge on those who killed them. These ghostly visitors often assume the shape of birds, such as a white dove, or a white duck.
People who often elect to visit their loved ones in this manner were murdered in some particularly gruesome manner. Once no longer living, they attempt to visit loved ones in these shapes, either to say goodbye, or in an attempt to let their loved ones know what really happened to them.
A sorcerer in disguise asks for directions. A mother, and daughter refuse to help him, but the stepdaughter does. The mother, and daughter are then turned black, and ugly, while the stepdaughter is rewarded with eternal beauty, and infinite wealth. But the mother enchants the waiting coachman to become half-blind, and she curses her stepdaughter to become half-deaf.
The mother then tricks the coachman to lose his way, and bring the stepdaughter to a window, where the mother proceeds to push her out. Upon her death, the stepdaughter hears that the mother has convinced the king to marry her, the black bride. The stepdaughter is then able to transform herself into a white duck and begins to talk to a boy who works in the kitchens. When the King hears of a talking duck, he finds it and cuts off her head.
But this seemingly violent act transforms the stepdaughter into her ordinary, living self again. Thus, the King marries her and kills the black bride.
Another avenging shapeshifter tale is The Rose Tree. Adored by her stepbrother, but hated by her stepmother, a young lady agrees to let her stepmother comb out her hair for her. Claiming her hair is far too detangled for an ordinary comb, the stepmother convinces the girl to retrieve an axe.
Mourning, the stepbrother does not eat any of the soup but rather buries his stepsister under some roses in the yard. Determined to have her revenge, the dead stepdaughter comes back as a white bird, winning over the affections of local townsfolk. They give her a pair of red shoes, a gold watch, and a giant stone. Rapping the stone against the house, the family believes a storm has started. The stepbrother comes out, and the white bird rewards him with the red shoes.
The father comes out, and the white bird rewards him with the gold watch. Finally, when the evil stepmother comes out, the white bird drops the millstone on her head, killing her on the spot.
There is much debate about whether or not shapeshifters really exist. Shapeshifting has been such a common concept on a global level for so long, many argue that there is simply no way it is a fictional ability.
Others, however, state that to change shapes in such a drastic, all encompassing manner, is currently scientifically impossible. Body alterations happen slowly, over time. When you shapeshift, choose two of your known transformations of the same size, and with a combined CR less than or equal to the maximum CR listed for your level. You transform into a creature visually resembling both of the chosen transformations.
You gain all the features of both forms, and choose which one to pick in case of a overlap. For example, you gain attack actions from both creatures, but pick the dexterity score of one creature. At 10th level, You become proficient in your choice of two of the following skills: Insight , Nature , Perception or Survival. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses either of those skills.
When you reach 14th level, you gain advantage on Wisdom Perception checks that rely on hearing or smell. Starting at 14th level, you learn to recoil into another form instead of reverting to your true shape.
On a success, you Shapeshift instead of reverting to your normal form. Your new form takes any damage past that which reduced you to 0.
At 18th level, when you roll for initiative and don't have any uses of Shapeshift remaining, you regain one use. Abnormality shapeshifters are those that embrace shapeshifting to the fullest.
These individuals have no qualms about staying shapeshifter for indefinite periods of time and seek to make their shapeshifted forms as powerful as possible by augmenting them with various mutations. By concentrating for 1 minute, you may shapeshift into your preferred creature without expending a shapeshift use, and you can remain in this form indefinitely. Beginning at 7th level, you gain access to a partial transformation in your true form untransformed form.
You may only have one partial transformation at any time and may replace it with another as part of a short rest. At 10th level, you may choose one mutation. Your choice of mutation grants you various benefits which get more powerful as you gain shapeshifter levels, and you gain the benefits of the Mutation feature even while you are shapeshifted.
