This Forum is only for support of WGA. Your issue appears to be outside the scope of the Genuine Advantage forum. In an attempt to assist I would like to provide the following information.
There are many articles you can review. If you find that Windows Update refuses to install most patches, you can register its missing DLLs yourself. This can be accomplished by manually entering seven commands shown in Step 2, below at a command prompt. If you need to run the fix on multiple machines, it's easiest to use a batch file, as Steps 1 through 5 explain: Step 1.
Open Notepad or any text editor. This effort to force users to either buy XP or tell them where you got the illegal copy is called 'Genuine Advantage. And yes, I use Maxthon most of the time. The applet downloads, but fails when it installs. I don't think it's an active-x issue at that point, but I could be wrong.

Then the autoupdate system decided that the Validation tool needed to be reinstalled, but the attempt to do so fails without error codes on two of my PCs.
Because Win XP won't allow deinstall of the Validation Tool and because the tool won't reinstall, I can't get any further updates from Microsoft. Fat Kev. Same thing is happening to me. Windows Update would show the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool as the only available update, but it would not install it.
After that, I could see more 34! I was able to download them, but it would still NOT install them I found something that works!! I looked around because I was having the same problems, and I was finally able to install all the updates. Harry Johnston [MVP].
